Kate Waterhouse and Luke Ricketson marry: Taormina destination wedding

Now that's what you call a destination wedding!

The June 28 nuptials of Sun-Herald fashion editor Kate Waterhouse and former footballer Luke Ricketson demonstrated that a destination wedding need not always be an obvious, oft-used choice.

No, this one was original, classy, and in Southern Italy - Sicily, to be exact.

The adage goes "See Venice and die" but I think the same applies to Taormina - the gorgeous coastal town where the celebrity duo exchanged vows is quite simply to-die-for.

The details?

The bride wore a Vera Wang, halter-neck gown with a bias-cut satin skirt she bought in New York. It was beautifully offset by a tulle veil and deco-style diamond jewellery. She was attended by five bridesmaids wearing nude-hued Carla Zampatti gowns.

The groom looked utterly dashing in a stylish suit in a shade not often seen on a groom: blue.

Some 80 guests flew in from all around the world to share in the special day; the ceremony was held at San Giuseppe Catholic Church, and the reception was held at the Grand Hotel Timeo, Taormina.

Ahead of her wedding day, Kate told the Sydney Morning Herald: "I can't believe it's finally the wedding day! I'm so excited, I feel like I'm the luckiest girl in the world to marry Luke. He is everything and more I would want in a man and to have family and friends share our special day in such a beautiful setting is a dream come true."

The couple were engaged during a candlelit dinner in Florence last year. Luke said at the time: "Kate's just amazing, she is everything to me."

The newlyweds are enjoying a honeymoon in Europe.

What's your dream destination wedding look like? If money was no object, where would it be? Share!
